cap cod, ma
Continually shaped by ocean currents, this windswept land of sandy beaches and dunes has compelling natural beauty. Everyone comes for the seaside, yet the crimson cranberry bogs, forests of birch and beech, freshwater ponds, and marshlands that grace the interior are just as splendid. Local history is fascinating; whale-watching provides an exhilarating experience of the natural world; cycling trails lace the landscape; shops purvey everything from antiques to pure kitsch; and you can dine on simple fresh seafood, creative contemporary cuisine, or most anything in between.

Separated from the Massachusetts mainland by the 17.5-mile Cape Cod Canal—at 480 feet, the world's widest sea-level canal—and linked to it by two heavily trafficked bridges, the Cape is likened in shape to an outstretched arm bent at the elbow, its Provincetown fist turned back toward the mainland.

Cape Cod, a hook-shaped peninsula in southeastern Massachusetts, is a popular summertime destination. Its 15 main towns encompass quaint villages, seafood shacks, lighthouses, ponds and bay and ocean beaches. Provincetown, at the far tip, marks the Pilgrims’ first anchorage in the New World with a towering monument. A longtime haven for artists, gays and lesbians, P-town offers numerous galleries, theaters, cabarets and nightclubs.

Provincetown’s Shopping

Annnd we're off to Provincetown, Massachusetts to #livelikealocal for this weekend's great American neighborhood exploration. Join us and follow our P-Town insider: @jsugarmama for week #5 of our #trybeforeyoubuy sweepstakes with @airbnb. More later while we check out this quirky beach community -- a blend of small-town enchantment and big-city pluck.

Locals and regulars refer to the New England beach town of Provincetown, MA, as “Ptown.” They joke that their classic, yet quirky, community is geographically located at the end of the world. Why? It’s way out there, residing at the easternmost tip of Cape Cod.
